Jungle Gym
2020
When asked to imagine something sculptural, playful, useful but unintrusive on a private property’s landscape, thoughts of the Predator (the movie and also the installation project by Greg Lynn), came to mind. Located on a beautiful, wild field in Hawaii, Jungle Gym is a playscape for children and adults. Stock playset components are assembled and modified in ways to allow for adult scale bodies to lean, slide, climb and lounge comfortably, while maintaining safety and ease of use for children to play. To have the least visual impact on the site, Jungle Gym is wrapped with printed vinyl of an image in its contextual likeness. Balancing between camouflage and legibility, the immediate landscape around the play structure is designed to produce a gradient between the artificial image of nature on the play structure and the untamed nature beyond.
